Improving Traction for Jumpers

Jumpers often encounter wet, muddy or sloppy conditions, particularly eventing horses. But even the jumpers and hunters will occasionally find themselves competing on grass, which can lead to traction issues when wet or dewy.

The main way to add traction to a horse's footing is by adding caulks (also known as corks or studs). Most caulks are screwed into the shoe, so they can be removed between competitions. This is particularly important because some caulks are very sharp, and can cause a lot of damage if the horse steps on itself!

One of the main types caulks used for jumpers are bullet studs, which have a bullet shape with a rounded tip. This helps give traction for slick or deep footing, while the conical shape allows for decent penetration of grassy surfaces.

In Oxer To Oxer, bullet studs can be applied to a horse's shoes to give them a one-time increase in a random jumping stat.
