Splash white is made of three genes, two on the same locus. A dominant gene on either the SW1+3 locus or SW2 locus produces a white pattern starting from the hooves and "splashing" upwards, like the horse has been dipped in paint. It can be affected by the W20 gene, producing a horse with larger white areas. Homozygous SW3 is lethal, leading to a stillborn foal.
