Gastrointestinal Treatments
Some of the most common gastrointestinal disorders in horses are gastric ulcers, colic and diarrhea. These problems can happen to horses from all walks of life, so they can be a big concern for horses owners.
One of the main gastrointestinal issues is gastric ulcers, which are erosions of the stomach lining causing pain. This usually happens when horses are not eating regularly, causing stomach acid to splash up onto unprotected parts of the stomach. Horses kept in stalls, frequently changing environments, and fed high grain diets are particularly susceptible to stomach ulcers. Omeprazole is used to help treat gastric ulcers by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach, allowing the damaged areas to heal.
Colic is another big issue in horses, which is essentially any disruption of the digestive system leading to abdominal pain. It can range from mild, medically-managed colics due to gas build up or mild constipation, to severe surgically-managed colics like intestinal twists. In both cases, one of the best drugs to help control abdominal pain is flunixin meglumine. In the case of medical colics, flunixin can help make them comfortable enough to resolve their intestinal issues on their own. In surgical cases, it can help stabilize them until they ready for surgery, and help manage their pain after surgery.
Diarrhea in horses can be caused by many things, ranging from bacterial infections to viruses to even certain types of tumours. In most cases however, diarrhea is caused by bacterial overgrowth. One of the go-to compounds to help manage diarrhea cases is di-tri-octahedral smectite, otherwise known as biosponge. It helps treat diarrhea by binding bacterial toxins, which has been shown to help shorten duration of diarrhea in humans. While there haven't been many horse-based studies, it is still commonly used by practitioners for this purpose!
In Oxer To Oxer, these drugs have been combined into one compound called Recover. Administering it to a horse with a gastrointestinal issue can reduce their recovery time by half!
